Who is the lighting designer?

Architect Laura Pastine at Gastinger Walker

Linear recessed lights line a grid ceiling in a team collaboration area between offices with sliding glass fronts.

What was the lighting design goal for this project?

“To provide modern, efficient fixtures to support multiple work scenarios for the law practice during both daytime and nighttime hours,” says Kevin Harden, AIA, NCARB, a Gastinger Walker managing partner. “Being on a busy street in a residential area, this building needed to create a professional presence through lighting in ways which are appropriate for the residential neighborhood.”

Conference rooms with linear recessed lights can be configured for training, meeting and mock-trial scenarios.

What was the lighting challenge?

For the lighting system to have high levels of controllability to balance the benefits of natural daylighting with performance needs for working, conferencing and social networking.

Which Alcon Lighting products did you use and how did they help you achieve the desired outcome?

“Our team specified Alcon Lighting’s architectural LED round cylinder wall-mounted light for exterior locations based on the modern aesthetic and high-performance design,” Harden explains. “As an Energy Star-rated fixture, this lighting choice improved our ability to design this project to be 28 percent below baseline in energy use.”

What was the overall goal of the space? How did you go about achieving the client's vision?

“Sharp Law Office’s goal was to provide an adaptable new building with flexible working and social spaces using modern design, high-performance systems and durable materials. To accomplish this, we designed offices with sliding glass fronts opening to team collaboration spaces, conference rooms that can be configured for training, meeting or mock-trial scenarios and both indoor and outdoor gathering areas.”

What are some unique considerations when designing for Sharp Law Offices?

“As a national law firm needing an office as both a physical presence and a platform that’s capable of serving a virtual practice,” Harden says. “Sharp Law’s design needed to perform well in both modes. This design allows for individual heads-down work within team spaces while providing privacy and high-level conference support blending technology, lighting and window shading systems.”

Architects seek light fixtures that offer user-friendly features and support their design goals. These customizable lights, often referred to as architectural or specification-grade, comprise the majority of lighting products used in commercial lighting applications today. Commercial lighting refers to lighting for non-residential application or any space designated for commercial application and use. Commercial-grade lighting denotes products built with features, such as increased durability, vandal-resistance, Bluetooth Mesh systems, WiFi, daylight harvesting and color-tunable controls.
