Healthcare Lighting FAQ

Germicidal ultraviolet lights (GUV) offer a non-chemical disinfection method, producing ultraviolet C (UVC) light with a wavelength of 275 nanometers (nm). This short-wave UV light disrupts DNA pairings, inactivating viruses, bacteria and other pathogens.
UVC light is harmful to living organisms. Misuse of a UVC light can pose a threat to people, pets and plants. Only use the UVC function when a room is unoccupied.
UVC lights can effectively combat the spread of:
Acinetobacter baumannil
Escherichia coli
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Staphylococcus albus
E. Coli (MS2)
Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)
Candida albicans
Antimicrobial finishes kill microorganisms that come in contact with the fixture. This helps mitigate infection risks by preventing live bacteria from remaining in a space once a patient leaves. Antimicrobial finishes are recommended for most medical lighting applications, including hospitals, patient rooms, exam rooms, waiting rooms, cleanrooms, and labs.
LED lighting offers efficiency, reduced maintenance and improved performance over other bulb types. LED bulbs generally operate for 50,000-100,000 hours, which is up to 25 times longer than halogen lights and 50 times longer than incandescent. That means fewer bulb replacements and lower maintenance costs.
LED bulbs also offer superior color rendering compared to fluorescent bulbs, which can be beneficial during diagnosis and exams.

Yes, many of the light fixtures we offer have universal dimming compatibility, allowing for integration within existing lighting systems. Bi-level and tri-level step dimming systems can be beneficial in healthcare applications, allowing staff to transition from ambient light that promotes patient comfort to exam lighting for visibility during evaluations and procedures.
There is currently no specific certification or combination of certifications required for MRI lighting. MIR LED fixtures are made of non-ferrous metals that ensure safe and reliable operation in imaging suites. These fixtures also come with antimicrobial finishes to help mitigate infection risks throughout the facility.
MRI lighting products may also offer an optional Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) filter to protect from damage caused by the high levels of radiation emitted by MRI machines.
