Six of the buildings on Amazon\u2019s Seattle campus have been awarded with the U.S. Green Building Council\u2019s LEED Gold certification for sustainable design and construction methods, while 20 of the buildings were built using LEED standards. These buildings\u2019 interiors feature salvaged and locally sourced woods, energy-efficient lighting and composting recycling alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Green roofs on Amazon\u2019s Doppler building \u2014 which\u00a0includes\u00a0a dog park \u2014 and its Meeting Center capture and filter rainwater while also reducing the buildings\u2019 heating and cooling loads. Additionally, the green roofs help to moderate the urban heat island effect along with improving local air quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Amazon\u2019s newest buildings, which are located in the city\u2019s Denny Triangle, are heated using recycled energy from a nearby data center making it four times more efficient than traditional heating methods. Dubbed a \u201cdistrict energy\u201d system, the process works by capturing heat generated at a neighboring non-Amazon data center and recycling the heat through underground water pipes instead of venting it into the atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4417 size-large lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.alconlighting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Amazon-Spheres-1637-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Amazon Spheres 1637 1024x683\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Photo\u00a0from\u00a0Seattle Magazine<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>Green Work Spaces\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">By joining the Department of Energy\u2019s Workplace Charging Challenge, Amazon now offers PEV charging stations for electric vehicles for its more than 40,000 employees that work throughout the Seattle campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">But the Internet giant took\u00a0green to a whole new level this January, when it officially opened its Amazon Spheres \u2014 three spherical conservatories located on the company\u2019s Seattle headquarters. The Spheres, which serve as an employee workspace, consist of three glass domes covered in pentagonal hexecontahedron panels. The domes range from three to four stories tall and house 40,000 plants, meeting spaces and soon retail stores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">One of the most spectacular, and possibly the most \u201cgreen\u201d features of the Spheres, is a large 90-foot vertical living wall. The plant life on the wall was grown in a quarter-acre of Amazon\u2019s own greenhouse space and takes up over 3,000 square feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">While they will soon be home to retail and possibly restaurants, the Spheres were created to offer an un-traditional workspace designed to stimulate employees by being emerged in natural plant life along with a blend of natural and LED lighting \u2014 a combination that has already been proven to enhance productivity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><span class=\"s1\">Of course not all Seattle residents are in favor of Amazon&#8217;s recent developments.\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/scruggs-amazon-commentary\/commentary-why-no-city-should-want-amazons-hq2-idUSKCN1BP2F8\">Some<\/a> are lamenting Amazon\u2019s footprint in their city, <\/span>blaming the company for rent spikes and the demise of small businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8230;bringing in Amazon is like a heroin injection; it\u2019s a sharp spike that can balloon housing prices and flip entire neighborhoods in the blink of an eye.
