I have a new construction project project in Los Angeles that is governed by the California Title-24. I have been advised that in the kitchen and bathroom, If I’m not going to be using energy efficient lighting, I need to use a sensor.

In shopping for sensors, I have found a Vacancy Sensor and an Occupancy Sensor.

Please advise on the difference.

Thanks,
Sarah M.

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for posting your question.

Occupancy sensors are designed to turn on automatically upon motion activation of someone entering the particular room.

Vacancy sensors are designed to be manually turned on upon entrance.

Both sensors turn off at a pre-determined interval of time after the room is vacated.

The main reason as to why Title-24 code suggests the use of Vacancy sensors to Occupancy sensors is because using a motion activated sensor that turns on lights when someone enters the room (an Occupancy sensor) would be inefficient during the daytime.

Although Title-24 code varies on this topic from room to room, I have provided the general breakdown of the difference between the two units.

Hope this helps.
