In response to the rise in deaths from accidental inhalation of this dangerous gas, the state of California has enacted a new carbon monoxide safety law (effective Jan. 1, 2011), requiring carbon monoxide detectors in rental units and dwellings sold. It also requires detectors installed in all homes by Jan. 1, 2013.
