Get Rebates from Fluorescent Retrofits!

Posted by: David Hakimi    Tags:      Posted date:  June 22, 2012  |  No comment

In case you didn't hear the news, the old and ancient T12 fluorescent lamp is going away. Between the EISA regulations (and the rising technology), more and more efficient lamps are coming out (T8 and T5). Most manufactures now sell their fluorescent lamps with a ballast as a package to emphasize an optimized system (if it doesn't come with a ballast, I would strongly recommend getting one with your T8 or T5 because they go hand-in-hand). The T12 will become much more harder to find, therefore it will put a bigger hole in your wallet. If you are looking to get your hands on T12, you'll be extremely...

How to Buy A Light Bulb In 2012

Posted by: David Hakimi    Tags:  cfl bulbs, Color rendering, incandescent bulbs, led bulbs, led light bulbs, lighting terms, lumens, watts    Posted date:  October 4, 2011  |  No comment

These days, a browse through Alcon Lighting's website (alconlighting.com) or even the lighting aisle at Home Depot is likely to leave you baffled. Here are the terms you need to know. LUMENS: The amount of light a bulb produces. Depending on which government agency you ask, this is “brightness” or “light output.” Your reference point: A standard 100-watt incandescent produces about 1,700 lumens. WATTS: Not a measure of brightness; instead, it’s a measure of how much energy a bulb consumes to reach its claimed brightness. WATT EQUIVALENT: Since we’ve conflated watts and brightness,...

Philips Discusses It’s Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize

Last week the DOE (Department of Energy) announced the winner of the 60-W replacement category of its Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize (L Prize) competition, which aims to find a replacement for the 60-W incandescent bulb. Philips Lighting received the $10 million prize for its 9.7-W, 910-lumen LED bulb, which was submitted in 2009 and underwent roughly 18 months of testing to ensure that it met the exacting competition requirements. Zia Eftekhar, CEO, Philips Lighting North America accepted the award on August 3 in Washington D.C. during an event hosted by U.S. Senators Jeff Bingaman and Lisa...

Move Over Wifi, LiFi Is Here: Internet Through Lightbulbs

What if every light bulb in the world could also transmit data? At TEDGlobal, Harald Haas demonstrates, for the first time, a device that could do exactly that. By flickering the light from a single LED, a change too quick for the human eye to detect, he can transmit far more data than a cellular tower -- and do it in a way that's more efficient, secure and widespread. From our friends over at GOOD: As more and more people—and their many devices—access wireless internet, clogged airwaves are going to make it increasingly difficult to latch onto a reliable signal. But radio waves are just...

Game Changers, Cree’s New MR16 LED Light Bulb

Posted by: David Hakimi    Tags:  cree, dimmable, led light bulb, low voltage, mr16    Posted date:  December 17, 2010  |  One Comment

It has finally arrived, a truly dimmable low voltage MR16 LED bulb. With ultra brighter Cree LED as light source, Alcon Lighting's MR16 bulbs give off reliable white light and are the best to be used for background or effect lighting, the MR16 bulbs are dimmable and compatible with low voltage dimmers. They only consume a fraction of the power used by the standard lamps to give the same light output at 3*2W, so they are perfect for application in areas where you would like to leave lamps on for long periods but perhaps do not need bright lighting. They are compact, green and high efficient...

From our partners at the Daily Breeze: City officials on Monday celebrated the 10th anniversary of the iconic, color-changing pylons at Los Angeles International Airport. The 15 pillars of light - representing each of the city's council districts - have since become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Los Angeles. The 100-foot-tall glass pylons and the 32-foot-tall letters spelling out "LAX" were installed and illuminated at Century and Sepulveda boulevards in August 2000 as part of a $112 million airport enhancement project. City officials on Monday unveiled a plaque...

The Evolution of LEDs: Greater Energy Efficiency & More Competitive Pricing

Posted by: David Hakimi    Tags:  alcon lighting, compact fluorescent light, led, light bulbs, los angeles, pharox, philips    Posted date:  October 22, 2010  |  No comment

The prospects of replacing today’s inefficient incandescent light bulbs with long lasting, low powered LEDs are increasing. Two of the industry’s stalwarts, Viribright and Lemnis, have been sell energy-efficient LED bulbs that can replace a standard 60-watt bulb incandescent. Lemnis Lighting’s Pharox is fully dimmable unlike the Viribright 60-watt replacement, which makes a slightly more appealing to consumers. Beginning in January 2012, federal law will require that light bulbs, or lamps as the industry calls them, will need to be 30% more efficient than current incandescent bulbs. Standard...

The Future is Bright with OLEDs (Organic LEDs)

Posted by: David Hakimi    Tags:  alcon lighting, architecture, displays, led, light sources, los angeles, organic LED    Posted date:  September 27, 2010  |  No comment

We at Alcon Lighting have taken a particular liking to the next revolution in lighting technology. "Researching for the next stage of LEDs, we stumbled upon Organic LEDs, a lighting technology that is being advocated as an architectural lighting game-changer," says Jake Hakimi, director of Sales for Alcon Lighting. That technology is the organic light-emitting diode (OLED). OLEDs are solid-state devices composed of thin films of organic molecules that create light with the application of electricity. OLEDs provide brighter, sharper displays for on various electronic devices, and consume less...

The world is trying to cut energy cost and they are even trying to solve the problem of electricity shortage. Electricity shortage is not a problem being faced by one or two countries; the entire world is facing this problem. To solve the problem; countries have started taking measures such as load shedding. Load shedding has not really helped at all; instead it has affected the economies o the countries who have adopted this method. Researchers and manufacturers have even tried to solve this issue and they have produced two forms of lights; one is LED lighting and the other one is Compact...
